note: this list is a bit out of date. i will update it soon!
AppFresh
- After installing all these apps, you'll need an easy way to keep them
up-to-date, right? Enter AppFresh.
Cyberduck
- The best FTP client I've found for OS X. It's fast, allows for remote
editing, is well integrated with the Finder, and generally rocks.
Gimp
- Like Photoshop, but $600 cheaper.
Growl
- A notification system that integrates with oodles of apps.
HyperEdit
- Until
Nvu comes out with a
Universal Binary, this is going to be my favorite HTML/PHP/CSS editor.
It's lightweight and does a great job handling live previews.
iConcertCal
- An iTunes plugin that shows upcoming concerts and album release dates
for artists in your iTunes library.
Jumpcut
- A clipboard extender that lets you store multiple clips and access your
copy history. Intuitive and invaluable. Because of this app, I can't stand
using other people's computers.
Miro
- Manages videos and video feed subscriptions. Good video player with
nice interface.
NeoOffice
- Think Microsoft Office, but built for OS X. And free. (Built on the
OpenOffice platform with Aqua integration.)
Quicksilver
- This is magic. I only use it for really basic things like finding and
launching, but I think it might make you coffee and function as a time
machine with the right plug-ins.
Transmission
- Easily OS X's best BitTorent client.
TVShows
- Integrates with a BitTorrent client to act like a TiVo for your
computer.
xPad
- I used to have lots of text documents saved on my desktop
(to-do lists, notes, etc.) Now I just have xPad in the Dock.
Great improvement.
Shoebox
- Photo browser and organizer. Handles large libraries better than
iPhoto, doesn't move files around or create duplicates, and has a nifty
backup system.
TextMate
- Extremely versatile text editor. I use it for all my coding. And it's shiny!
Xslimmer
- Strips unnecessary code from Universal Binaries, freeing up disk space. Not
all that necessary, but it's kinda fun.
Note: All these apps are for OS X. Gimp, iConcertCal, Miro, Nvu, and OpenOffice are also available for Windows.
Quench Zine
- I may be biased because I'm a contributor, but it would still be an
awesome blog without me. I think we've defined it as a "gender,
sexuality, and WTF?!" blog.
Lifehacker
- I think the time I spend reading this site cancels out the time I
save by reading it.
Mahalo
- Human-powered search engine of Awesome.
Price Protectr
- Keeps track of purchases under price protection from oodles of stores.
Project Vote Smart
- Non-profit, non-partisan voters' information organization. They're
saving democracy.
Threadless
- A constantly rotating stock of user-designed shirts. They're fun. And
really comfy.
Woot
- They sell something cheap every day. Thanks to this site, I've bought
so many things I never knew I needed...
xkcd
- Geeky and amazing.
